Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists the child development specialist in the execution of a diverse array of technical tasks that are pertinent to child development. This includes the creation of weekly lesson plans that incorporate age-appropriate activities and exhibit creativity and resourcefulness in the planning of programs and the utilization of materials.
- Assists the child development specialist in the instruction of children in a childcare age unit by developing and executing lesson plans and other activities.
- Collaborates with a child development specialist to present age-appropriate demonstrations of children’s behavior and development.
- Assists with the daily assignments of students and the evaluation of classroom activities and performance; provides guidance to students regarding Center rules and regulations related to childcare.
- Maintains and records training hours and attendance records; prepares reports and correspondence regarding classroom operations and activities.
- Organizes and participates in games; reads stories and teaches basic painting, drawing, handwork, songs, and similar activities; assists children in removing clothing; assists children in the development of habits for caring for their own clothing and picking up and putting away toys and books; and supervises activities related to eating, resting, and toileting. Maintains the classroom’s hygiene, physical organization, and discipline.
- Maintains informal communication with parents regarding their children’s development and conduct.
- Participates in all scheduled staff meetings; organizes and executes staff training as required.
- Punctually reports to work and attends the workplace in accordance with the established work schedule.
- Depending on the deadline and special events, working hours may encompass weekends, holidays, or evenings.
- Completes responsibilities and obligations in accordance with the policies, standards, and guidelines of the college.
- Successfully completes all professional development and training sessions that are sponsored by Texas Southmost College.
- Assists in the development of enhancement plans based on the assessment of appropriate outcomes, monitors the assessment of those outcomes, and participates in the development of outcomes.
- Engages in the systematic review and evaluation process in accordance with the institutional efficacy model that the College has implemented.
- Fosters the values and institutional objectives outlined in the College’s Strategic Plan.
- Encourages collaboration and positive morale within the department, while also delivering exceptional customer service to the community, faculty, and students.

Required Education and Experience
An individual must be capable of satisfactorily fulfilling each essential responsibility in order to effectively execute this position. The education and experience prerequisites specified below are indicative of the necessary qualifications.
- A Certificate of Proficiency in Child Care and Development or a Certificate in Early Childhood Education from an accredited college or university, in addition to one (1) year of full-time experience as a caregiver working directly with children in a Texas Health and Human Services/Child Care Regulations (THHS/CCR) licensed or certified child care center, or one (1) year of full-time classroom teaching (assisting) in a public or private accredited school from birth through kinder, during a customary school year; or substitute or part-time classroom teaching in a public or private accredited school from birth through kinder, if the total length of time adds up to two years of full-time teaching during a customary school year.
- Demonstrated expertise in the development and maintenance of productive and positive working relationships with the community, faculty, students, staff, and parents.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Associate’s degree in early childhood education or child care and development from an accredited college or university, in addition to one year of full-time experience working directly with children from birth to kindergarten in a DFPS (licensed or certified center) or a public or private accredited school.
- Bilingual in both English and Spanish.
Certificates and Licensures
- Complies with all of the Child Care Licensing Standards established by the THHS/CCR for child-care professionals.
- It is mandatory to possess Public Health Food Handler Certification or obtain it within one (1) week of employment.
- It is mandatory to possess a Pediatric CPR Certification or obtain it within one (1) week of employment.
- Must possess Pediatric First Aid certification with rescue breathing and suffocation capabilities or obtain certification within one (1) week of employment.
- Successful completion of the background check conducted by the Texas HHS/CCR Licensing Division.
- A Tuberculosis (TB) test that is not more than one (1) year old must be clear.
- Required annual professional training hours must be completed in accordance with Texas Rising Star Guidelines, THHS/CCR Child Care Licensing Standards, TDA Food and Nutrition-CACFP, and NAEYC Program Standards or obtained certification within one (1) week of hire. These hours must be completed at the local, state, and national levels.
